The holidays are almost upon us and that means...presents! In all honesty, the holidays are not necessarily the time that people are commissioning custom designed pieces to be made from scratch. Instead they are looking for something they can buy fairly quickly that is still beautiful, customizable and meaningful. As a custom designer, who creates everything from scratch, this creates a bit of a conundrum for me.
In order to address a need for pieces that are ready-to-wear and have a quick turnaround, I decided to create a Holiday Gift Guide. In this gift guide I am introducing five new ready-to-wear collections that are perfect for everyday layering and stacking. For quite some time I had been against creating any type of collection as I pride myself on creating extremely unique, grand and one-of-a-kind pieces. However, I found myself fumbling around in my own jewelry box looking for a few stylish pieces that were not too dressy that I could throw on. I liked the idea of creating key pieces that were simple, wearable, unusual yet elegant.
The new collections featured in the Holiday Gift Guide are the Gimmel Puzzle Rings, the Forward Facing Diamond Hoop Earrings, Rondel, Dao and Feeling Gold Collections. The Gimmel Puzzle Rings were inspired by a puzzle ring (dating back to 1824), belonging to grandmother, that unfolds to reveal hidden engraving on the inside. You can read more about the history of the Gimmel Ring in a blog I wrote on the subject. Being a mother myself, I immediately thought what a perfect mother’s ring this would make. The names of your children can be engraved on the inside and folded up to be protected, just like a mother always does.
The Forward Facing Diamond Hoop Earrings come in two sizes, medium and large, and are a unique adaptation of the traditional hoop earring. I love the fact that they face forward instead of being parallel to your face. They also wrap around the ear and are set with beautiful diamonds at the top. The Rondel Collection is dainty, fun and perfect for creating that layered look. There are two necklaces, a bracelet and stud earrings. The Dao Collection is inspired by feminine strength derived from the Two of Swords tarot card and the curved design is from the ancient Dao sword. This collection will also be the first to be created entirely using certified recycled gold and ethically sourced CanadaMark ™ diamonds. I have been implementing sustainable practices into my jewelry fabrication and I am thrilled to be able to create an entire collection in this manner.
While the designs are unique, what truly makes these pieces special is that they are each hand-finished with a textured surface that creates a golden halo around the center. I developed a unique type of engraving that creates thin lines on the metal that radiates outward from the center of the piece. The engraving is one-of-a-kind and we even developed a special graver to create this look. The finishing on a piece is extremely important to me as it shows the hand of the artist. It shows that the pieces are made by hand and that “someone” (an expert artisan) and not a machine touched and molded them to create a thing of beauty. All the pieces in the Holiday Gift Guide are fully customizable. There is a two week wait time so orders for Christmas will be taken up until December 5.
